The news is abuzz with reports of the spreading Enterovirus EV-D68. The virus, which is much like the common cold, is sending children to the hospital in mass numbers. So now we know what it is and where it’s at, but how do we prevent it and if we do get it, how do we deal with it?
According to the CDC, prevention is all about keeping those germs away.
- Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick
- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick
It’s important to note that Enterovirus is a VIRUS. Antibiotics aren’t going to touch it (it’s for bacteria). Doctors are treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the virus. So, here’s a few ideas …
- Take a steam shower. Turn on the warm water, close the doors and let your kiddo play in the shower to loosen all of the mucus.
- Make your own homemade version of Vicks Vapor Rub. Here’s an amazing vapor rub recipe.
- While you’re over at Wellness Mama, grab her hand sanitizer recipe.
- Invest in a cold mist humidifier.
- Monitor your child’s fever and breathing. If the fever goes higher than 101, put your pediatrician on alert. If there is EVER any labored breathing, call your pediatrician immediately and begin making preparations to take your child to the closest Children’t hospital.
We can beat this as a country if we all work together to keep sick people home until they recover, wash our hands and be mindful of touching our mouth, eyes, etc.
