What made YOU a crunchy mom?
Obviously becoming a mom is the first requirement, but for all of us there was THAT moment when you yourself decided to do things differently or uniquely or with great care. Even if you are a 2nd or 3rd generation crunchy mom, you consciously made the decision to be THAT mom. The mom that we now call crunchy.
As for me, I am a first generation crunchy mom. The idea of using a cloth diaper, wearing a baby, breastfeeding, delaying vaccines or not circumcising our sons was gasp-worthy in my family. And not the “awe, that’s awesome” kind of gasp. More like the “you’re insane” kind of gasp.
I honestly don’t know if I would even be this crunchy if it wasn’t for a gal named Sarah in a DIN 2005 pregnancy board who opened my eyes. Her posts and information led me to reject the status quo and research EVERYTHING. Everything.
My birth plan changed a good dozen times. I had 5 copies in my hospital bag. I bought 4 different kinds of baby carriers and 3 brands of cloth diapers. I was also the first in my family to reject formula since it was invented.
It didn’t stop there. I had a delayed vaccine schedule that I felt would protect our sons on many levels. Even though it drove our pediatrician crazy. For our 2nd and 3rd sons, we chose to go with a midwife (one day I will post about those experiences). Oh, the list goes on and on.
For me being crunchy is about returning to our roots. Returning to what our grandmothers, grandmother did. Returning to what our bodies and hearts were naturally made to do. Sometimes I feel like generations have fought it so hard, but you, you reading this right now, you’re a pioneer that will lead the way to more of us returning to our roots.
Here’s to the crunchy moms.
