Vegans rejoice! The nationally renowned cupcake company, Sprinkles, has broken into the vegan cupcake market. Alas, they have only one flavor available, but it is a classic and delicious choice, vegan red velvet. It is available to purchase every day, and is clearly marked with a red V. In place of dairy they use a tofu-based cream cheese, pure coconut oil, and soy milk.
I stopped by Sprinkles this past week to get some goodies for a friend. While we were there, I took a chance and got the Vegan Red Velvet for my son. He is dairy- free, and until now, I have not been able to share the pleasure of Sprinkles Cupcakes with him. I have tried a number of vegan cupcakes in the past, and have never been impressed. The texture or taste has always been strange and I was just a little wary of what was in store.
And the verdict is…..
Well, they say a picture says a thousand words, so here you have it. My son was licking his fingers and would have licked the plate clean if I had let him.
In my opinion, Sprinkles Cupcakes has done a wonderful job and made a truly great vegan cupcake. It tastes exactly like red velvet should. The cake is moist and the texture is just perfect. The icing has a hint of coconut due to the use of coconut oil, but it is luscious and the perfect consistency. Overall, I thought that the cupcake was delicious. The addition of the coconut is fantastic, and am very impressed with what Sprinkles has done. We will definitely be going back, and hopefully next time we stop in there will be some more vegan flavors to choose from.
